Manics Top 50s - 5th Dec 2021 part 2

So here they are, the final six charts of the 2021 edition of the Manics Top 50s that arrived on deadline day.  First up is one of our artistic entries, lovingly cut and pasted into a suitable format and giving Condemned To Rock 'N' Roll another number 1 in the process.  Bag Lady also grabbed its highest placing at number 3, while Generation Terrorists and The Holy Bible shared the spoils in the By Era chart with nine each.

It's another suitably Manics-esque presentation next and fittingly it's Stay Beautiful in the number 1 position, perhaps surprisingly for the first time.  It's a chart that's heavily weighted towards the first few albums, with Generation Terrorists (and before) having 14 entries.  The Drowners is saved at the last minute from the no-vote list at number 39.

Stay Beautiful waits all this time for a number 1 and then another comes along immediately after the first!  With it being my own number 3, of course I approve of such behaviour.  Generation Terrorists leads the By Era chart with eight picks, ahead of This Is My Truth with six.  And another song is rescued from no-vote oblivion, Rock 'N' Roll Genius sneaking in at number 50 to gain one single point.  In Jenni's own words:

Compiling a chart like this is equal parts pure fun, very exciting and a bit intimidating as well. The majority of these choices are the long shadows of the past few years, the zeitgeist of a strange time when I've listened to less music than ever before. Thus I gather these songs must've truly meant something. From complete surprises to never-changing staples from my 25 years of being a fan.

On this list all songs bar one were chosen by pure intuition – I wrote each eligible title on paper, cut them out and sorted each into categories of NO, POSSIBLY and YES. In the end I had 49 YES songs and had to take a very deep dive into POSSIBLY to decide which was the lucky one to make it into the final 50. That, I can tell you, was the most painful part.

From this done and dusted final list you won't find any losers nor winners, but a glittery, bass-heavy journey from glorious hate & failure to triumphant climactic mess of eyeliner & spray-paint.

The final contributor from BBC Radio Cambridgeshire came in just before the deadline and A Design For Life led the way, gaining another 50 points at the last moment.  With a top 10 full of songs with an eye on the final 50, would these points have guaranteed them all a place though?  This Is My Truth just pipped Generation Terrorists in the By Era chart with eight picks to seven.

The final chart of this edition of the Manics Top 50s goes to my impromptu train companions out of Llandudno last week, with help from her daughter.  Motown Junk was in top spot, and not for the first time, which I can say with confidence without checking the spreadsheet given I also picked it.

There's an intermittent Wire vocal theme to the upper reaches of the chart and I expect it will come as no surprise to learn that 4th place here was Wattsville Blues' highest placing.  Antisocialmanifesto at number 7 was successfully removed from the no-vote list at the very last minute.
