Manics Top 50s - 5th May 2015 part 2

Three more charts here from that action-packed Tuesday earlier in the week, the first one is another with a piece written by the person in question and like quite a few of the charts this week has a fair selection from one of the under-appreciated albums, Know Your Enemy, as does the second chart.  The second chart also sees a new number 1 selected from another album that generally picks up less votes, Lifeblood.

Chart 3 sees a return to the more familiar Holy Bible claiming the most entries, although as always there are some individual choices creeping in to make it unique.  Another blog will follow tomorrow with Wednesday's single chart, hopefully in the meantime we'll have had a few more, keep 'em coming and spread the word, we're halfway to getting the same number as last time!

"Been a Manics fan on my own from about age 15 (10 years!) really got attracted by the "Glamour Twins" sexyness and feminist lyrics of Generation Terrorists, the spiritually questioning lyrics to "Cruicifix Kiss" in particular. Introduction to Nietzsche quoted in the cover, fascinated with the horrific lyrics of THB, new to the fan scene. THB refuelled my questioning agnosticism, and in a lot of ways fuelled my desire to get back into education. I identify strongly with Richey's struggles with truth and religion why I started up Scriptureinterrogator.tumblr.com

The songs I've chosen particularly the top 20 have significance, Tsunami I heard live and burst into tears because the beauty of music you forget what associations you have, "Yes" my first experience of fiercely following THB lyric book and being so so shocked by the lyrics, "Baby Elian" first experience hearing it beautifully acoustic on the Louder Than War DVD..."

Manics Top 50s - 5th May 2015 part 1

Today we have two returning contributors from last time and a new fresh perspective to mix it up.  Our first chart speaks for itself with a personal contribution, the following two tend to lean towards the early half of the band's career but have a good cross-section from the rest of the albums.

Now seems a good time to update on those no vote album tracks after a glut of recent charts and we now have GT, GATS, THB, EMG, KYE, JFPL and PFAYM with a full complement of votes for their songs.  Of those not mentioned I think I'm right in saying that all of them are only one short of making it so if you haven't voted yet you may make the difference for one of your favourites!!  One of them is actually a single, shock horror.  More charts to follow from the 5th later tonight.....

"I’m not sure how many Manics fans came to the band because of something they read in USA Today, but that’s me. And all because of the so-called ill-fated Cuba trip (which I think was brilliant!). I'd heard of the band, but only in the context of them being lumped in with other 90's alternative bands, and had never heard their music. But I was fascinated by a short blurb in the paper, which I believe quoted Nicky, and mentioned the band’s trip to Cuba as being historic. I ran into a used copy of Know Your Enemy shortly thereafter and it quickly and quirkily agreed with my political-punk sensibilities (and I carried a cassette copy of the album on my own bicycle trip to the island a couple years later). Lifeblood soon followed, as the first Manics record to be released while I was a fan. I was disappointed at first by the lack of more overtly-political songs, but quickly came to love the record. And hence, both albums feature heavily on my chart. I’d list all of KYE if I could, if there only weren’t so many other stellar tracks across their catalog."

Manics Top 50s - 4th May 2015

It looks like we're now moving into the final stretch as the charts start moving again into the final 4 weeks.  Today we have a chart from someone who wasn't able to participate last time despite being a regular contributor to the related chats, so this chart was much anticipated!

In many ways it's the chart of the underdog, both song-wise and the albums that they come from, although Underdogs itself is conspicuous by its absence.  There aren't many charts where Know Your Enemy and Lifeblood will take as many songs each as the first 3 albums combined but we've learned to expect the unexpected!  Make sure you have a look at our first video entry as well (link below), a novel and interesting way to announce the chart.  Keep your eyes peeled, I think we're going to be getting a few more charts announced soon!!

Manics Top 50s - 3rd May 2015

Today, well, it's my turn.  If you follow this blog then it's highly likely that somewhere along the line you've seen my extended top 50, if you will, as I endeavoured to order the whole eligible 307 songs.  But this blog is for the top 50 only (the link for the full chart can be found below).  When I first announced the second coming of the top 50s I left the door open for people to make the blog their own and write about their experiences.  A few people have and others haven't, which is fine as it's optional after all, but I'll obviously take the opportunity to give my truth.

I first entered the Manics story in 1991, when I was 13.  I had seen a clip of Motown Junk on the Chart Show's Indie Chart and thought they looked pretty funny and then soon after taped You Love Us from the Evening Session.  They were definitely different to all of the other bands featured in NME and Melody Maker etc. in looks and sound and after reading some early interviews it was clear that they were happy to set themselves apart even more than that with their words.

As I was starting to buy more records around that time, my first purchase was the cassette single of the second version of You Love Us and I never missed a release from that point on, snapping up anything I could get my hands on, official or unofficial.  After I sent away for some fan club goodies and received a heap of fanzines, badges, stickers etc. in 1993, they managed to make the progression to being my favourite band.

There aren't many bands that can have such an effect on a person as to subtly shape them but the Manics are such a band.  They've always been around and have been my favourite band for 22 years now, so I couldn't tell you what might have happened if they never existed, but I think I'd probably be a different person, in whatever subtle ways that might manifest itself.

The overall chart was incredibly difficult to compile, the Manics are a band with a massive back catalogue given all of their many B-sides and non-album tracks alongside the inevitable albums.  As you can tell from the placings, I'm very much an old school type of fan, the first four albums are undoubtedly the best, but their career certainly didn't end in 1996, or even 1994 as some people may believe.  The last 20 years of their career have seen some classic songs and excellent albums, sure as with all bands there have been a few moments that didn't work, but they're in the minority.  Their B-sides and so called lesser songs can still eclipse a lot of bands' better songs and long may it continue.

Manics Top 50s - 16th April 2015

A solitary chart for you today from another chart first-timer but, despite being a little different from the norm, not a new number 1 as it appeared once last time around.  A nice mixture of regulars and some of those more individual choices (number 18 I'm looking at you!), there's only one album that misses out.

Another plug for my own chart of all 307 of the songs as it counts down in reverse order over at http://harmonycorruption.blogspot.co.uk/.  Of course only my top 50 (when I get there) will be included here, it's always interesting to see people picking off their favourites as they are announced, most major songs have their champion in one form or another regardless of how I (or anyone else) rate it.

For anyone that hasn't started yet there is still plenty of time, but don't take too long, the deadline looms 6 weeks away!  No pressure obviously.....

Manics Top 50s - 13th April 2015

Two charts today from a couple of chart regulars and coincidentally both Liverpool supporters.....but we won't hold that against them!  First up, after a stir with Nostalgic Pushead being his number one last time, it gets knocked off its perch by a familiar favourite.  What on earth can we tease him about now until the next time we do the charts?!

The second chart sees an even bigger surprise with a number 1 that wasn't even in his chart last time!  Apart from one album not making an appearance it's also a very even chart and plenty of underdogs in there getting their chance in the spotlight.

Manics Top 50s - 6th April 2015

Manics top 50s are a bit like buses, wait a while for another one to come along and......yeah, you get the picture.  Both charts have number 1s which I expect will again feature highly in the final chart, but both have a good mix of traditional classics and personal favourites.

Another thing that struck me while doing the By Era charts was how differently the two contributors view SATT and PFAYM (sister albums of sorts in my eyes), always interesting to see how people can love the same band but have such contrasting views on isolated sections of the back catalogue.

Both contributors are returning from last time, so thanks again for giving up your time to compile the charts!  We've still got the rest of April and May to go and I know there are plenty of people who haven't been yet, my own will be coming up shortly, so keep spreading the word so we can get as many charts as we can!
