Fantasy Setlist 2014

The setlist below was compiled from 27 different setlists submitted by Manic Street Preachers fans during April and May 2014.  One point was awarded for each vote and the final tally for each song is shown after the name of each one.  Four songs tied on points for the last two places in the final setlist, so the position in the fans' top 50 was used as a tiebreaker.  So, apologies to 'Jackie Collins Existential Question Time' and '(It's Not War) Just the End of Love' which were unlucky to miss out!!  Thank you to all people who took part in, followed or promoted these setlists, it has been great fun!!!

Points to note as follows:

  • Position was decided on average placing across the setlists, however 'This is Yesterday' had to be moved forward to fit in with the acoustic set.
  • The three acoustic songs received more votes as acoustic songs compared to full band versions, hence their appearance here as acoustic.
  • Kylie Minogue was the most popular choice of duet in 'Little Baby Nothing', therefore appears in the final set.
  • There were more votes for 'This Sullen Welsh Heart' without a guest singer than with one, therefore it is here as Manics-only.
  • More people omitted a 'Motown Junk' intro than included one, therefore it appears intro-less.

Now we know what the final setlist was, how did the songs do if you actually order them by number of votes?  Strangely enough, the same song that came top in the fans' top 50 also got the most votes here!!!  But it fell just short of appearing in every person's setlist (maximum votes 27).

Due to the limited number of places in the set there were a lot more songs with zero votes this time, so they aren't included in this list.  See further down for the lists by album where album tracks with zero votes are included if you're interested.

So, for album tracks, if you break down the votes by album you get the first list, I doubt there are many surprises there.  The second list is average votes per song, so strips out any advantages certain albums might get for having more songs.  This list is very similar in order to the one that came out of the top 50s, with 'Generation Terrorists' in particular suffering for its number of songs.

Album Chart by Votes
The Holy Bible 95
Generation Terrorists 89
Everything Must Go 66
Gold Against the Soul 63
Journal for Plague Lovers 53
This is my Truth Tell Me Yours 52
Rewind the Film 39
Send Away the Tigers 33
Postcards From a Young Man 29
Lifeblood 25
Know Your Enemy 24

Album Chart by Average Votes per Song
The Holy Bible 7.3
Gold Against the Soul 6.3
Everything Must Go 5.5
Generation Terrorists 5.2
This is my Truth Tell Me Yours 4
Journal for Plague Lovers 3.8
Rewind the Film 3.3
Send Away the Tigers 3
Postcards From a Young Man 2.4
Lifeblood 2.1
Know Your Enemy 1.5

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the final setlist the albums with the most songs were 'Generation Terrorists' and 'The Holy Bible' (counting 'Motown Junk' as being from the GT era).  'Postcards From a Young Man' was the only album not to be represented, although '(It's Not War) Just the End of Love' was unlucky to miss out in the tiebreaker.

Setlist By Era
Generation Terrorists 5
Gold Against the Soul 3
The Holy Bible 5
Everything Must Go 3
This is my Truth Tell Me Yours 2
Know Your Enemy 1
Lifeblood 1
Send Away the Tigers 1
Journal for Plague Lovers 1
Postcards From a Young Man 0
Rewind the Film 2
Others 1

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Going by overall score the 'Generation Terrorists' era got the highest total, the reliable old classics gaining a lot of votes.  It was a good show all round from the first four albums, gaining the lion's share of the votes from those that made it into the final setlist.

Setlist By Era By Score
Generation Terrorists 84
Gold Against the Soul 44
The Holy Bible 73
Everything Must Go 42
This is my Truth Tell Me Yours 23
Know Your Enemy 11
Lifeblood 10
Send Away the Tigers 14
Journal for Plague Lovers 12
Postcards From a Young Man 0
Rewind the Film 18
Others 9

And so to the albums themselves, ranked by number of votes for each of their tracks.  This is where the zero vote songs come in and, while there are obviously a lot of good songs in there, I can understand why they weren't selected for a setlist with limited space.  The only one that did surprise me a little was 'Elvis Impersonator: Blackpool Pier', not the song from EMG that I would expect to have been overlooked.

THB and JFPL were the only albums to get at least one vote for every song.  As with the top 50s the lack of singles from JFPL often prevents you from being unwittingly biased to those songs that get more airtime (he says having not selected any in his own setlist!).

Surprisingly(?), two of the 'National Treasures' songs didn't pick up any votes, others only scraped a few.  Nothing in this list particularly surprised me, some songs lend themselves more to being live favourites, others are much more suited to listening at home.

Like B-sides there weren't a lot of votes for covers, although some people chose to take the option of including their own fantasy covers (not included here).  As with the B-sides the top cover was the same as with the top 50s.

The Rules!

So, what if you were in charge of the setlist for a Manic Street Preachers gig?  Which songs would you pick?  A greatest hits set maybe, a whole set of songs they never play live, covers, B-sides, all of the above?  For this "chart" of sorts YOU are in charge!!
  • Select 25 different songs of your choice. This may contain ANY song the Manics have ever recorded or played live.
  • If you wish to select a fantasy cover that they have never ever played in any form but you would like them to, you may (however bear in mind this is highly unlikely to be selected by anyone else!).
  • With the above in mind, James or Nicky solo songs are valid entries if you would like to see the full band play them.
  • It doesn't HAVE to be your favourite 25 songs.  Some may not work as well live or you may just want to see certain songs played more than others, the choice is yours.
  • The order of the songs ideally will be how you want your gig to flow, however the order may not be important to you (see scoring for the effect of ordering).
  • You may specify that a song is included in a solo/acoustic section if you wish (see scoring for the effects of this).
  • As an additional option, in true Manics style, you may add your own setlist quote (thanks JamGaw for this suggestion!).

Scoring

  • No weighting will be applied to songs, each selection will count as 1 vote.
  • If you specified a song as solo/acoustic this counts against all votes for that song (i.e. there aren't separate entries for full band/solo songs).
  • For the 25 songs with the most votes, an average placing in the set will be calculated based on the order of your selections so that the final 25 is in the optimal order as decided by you.
  • If any of the top 25 entries has more votes as a solo/acoustic song than with the full band it will appear in the final set as solo/acoustic.

Submitting your Entry

Once you have your 25 selections, participants are encouraged to share their setlist (like with the top 50s) on Twitter for a lively debate with your followers!!  If you do this, put your own personal hashtag against each entry (e.g. #ManicsSetlistIanL) and let me know @Pyfbrown so that I can register your votes.  Each entry will go up on this blog with your Twitter name for anyone that may miss it to study and critique!!  Note: if you came across this blog through a site other than Twitter I will include another name as appropriate.

However, if you would rather blog your own setlist or just send it by email without counting down on Twitter in this way that's fine too, contact me to arrange this at the time.

The deadline for entries to be considered for the overall fans' setlist is Sunday May 18th 2014. Happy setlisting!!
