Manics Top 50s 25th Oct 2021

Two charts today and first up a number 1 that takes 50 points despite only having had three previous picks so far, Tennessee.  RP McMurphy also achieves its highest placing to date at number 5 and So Dead continues its recent run of success since having no votes, being in 5 of the last 9 charts!

Unsurprisingly given the songs I've mentioned so far, Generation Terrorists (and the songs that came before) feature prominently with 15 places.  We also have another of our no-vote album tracks selected in the shape of The Future Has Been Here 4 Ever, bringing the total down to three!  And I've already been told by someone that one of the remaining three will be in their upcoming chart, so potentially only two up for grabs!

The second chart has Tolerate in top spot, closely followed by fellow big guns A Design For Life, Motorcycle Emptiness and Faster.  The Holy Bible and This Is My Truth edge ahead in terms of the number of overall picks, David explains his truth below:

This was really hard to cut down, and just reminds me why the Manics remain my favourite band. It’s perhaps a cliche in terms of the top 2-3, but Design for Life introduced me to the band at 12 and became my gateway to intelligent, anthemic rock music. ‘Tolerate’ has just continued to resonate more over the past two decades; I cannot fathom how this was nearly relegated to a B-side (the horror…). It’s been refreshing to hear TUVL and have songs that my boys really enjoy like Orwellian which I’ll now treasure (proud parent moment when my youngest started singing along) but also to have a song like Diapause which makes my Top 10 at present and I’m willing to bet will still be riding high in 10 years’ time. To paraphrase the band themselves, God Bless the Manics.

The second chart has Motorcycle Emptiness in top spot, with 11 picks for the Generation Terrorists era and before.  There are also five picks from The Ultra Vivid Lament, all in the top half and two in the top 10.

Perhaps surprisingly, Suicide Alley grabs its first points so far, it seems to have taken quite a while for the single that started it all to have got on the scoreboard!

Manics Top 50s - 24th Oct 2021

It's a trio of top 50s today, with a number one each for the hot favourites for the overall top spot.  First up we have a pretty unique chart with an entire Generation Terrorists top 10 and an overall 20 songs from the GT era and before.  Last Christmas also takes its first points so far.  In Mark's own words:

Like many, I came across the Manics during the height of Britpop and ended the 90s at the Millennium Stadium singing along to the songs from those first 5 albums; what had by then become the soundtrack to my teenage years.

Generation Terrorists is the album I've always loved the most; the timeless politics, the glamour, the cheesy bits, the piano, the synthetic drums. JDB's vocals sound just old enough to be wise but just young enough to be foolish. GT-era Manics understood the iconography of music more than any other British band.

Manics Top 50s - 21st - 22nd Oct 2021

It's suddenly a bumper crop of charts today, starting with a top 50 ever-present, Heather subtitles her chart as "maybe leaving punky me behind a bit and embracing the soaring anthem and the lyrical reflective heartbreaker".  Design For Life takes the honours, snatching the top spot from Heather's favourite from last time, Faster.

The By Era chart shows the first five albums and Journal almost exclusively taking over, with a handful of Know Your Enemy, Lifeblood and standalone singles filling the other places.  Socialist Serenade also appears for the first time at 38.

Steve Murphy @iamstevemurphy

Next up is another one of our artistic entries and another host of the excellent What Is Music? podcast, recycling the style of their Manics season graphics.  If you haven't listened to their Manics season, make sure you do so to be dazzled, amused and infuriated in equal measure by the varying opinions of their back catalogue.

Steve also goes for Design For Life at number 1, earning it a whopping 100 points in just two charts, and ends up with seven songs each from the This Is My Truth and Lifeblood eras.

Faster reclaims top spot in the next chart, which also managed to take another song off the fabled no-vote list with So Dead's selection.  Another chart that leans more towards the first five albums, but does have lots of picks later on in the Manics' career, with only Rewind The Film missing out.

The Convalescent was picked for only the third time in its highest position so far at number 8, while Let's Go To War also hit its third pick.

The honour of the 50th top 50 goes to the next chart, I would have presented Steve's artistic endeavours here too but a few teething problems with the selections put paid to that one so he'll have to make do with my boring black and blue presentation!  As with the last chart Faster takes top spot and gains its own 100 points across two charts.

The first four album eras all hit double figures in terms of the number of entries with many albums missing out.  Surprisingly (to me at least), New Art Riot is selected for only the third time and in its highest placing at number 8.  The Holy Bible almost appears in its entirety, with just She Is Suffering missing out.

The final chart of this batch has Indian Summer at number 1, in only its fifth pick so far.  There are lots of places for B-sides and some of those lesser-loved songs, with Distractions easily taking its highest placing at number 9 in its second pick and What Happened To The Blue Generation, Primitive Painters and Evidence Against Myself all picking up their first points.  In Key's own words:

Don't have much to say except the fact that my top pick has always been and forever will be Indian Summer, I just have so much love for that song. It's the second song I've ever heard by the Manics (first one being Your Love Alone), and while I do massively enjoy the entirety of Send Away the Tigers (my favorite Manics album!), this one hits the hardest for me. I think the music video is really fitting, too - when I fell in love with the song and was playing it on repeat one night, it brought me to tears because it evoked so many childhood memories. It's really special to me.

Manics Top 50s - 20th - 21st Oct 2021

Two charts again today and the first is from a returning top 50-er who has given his story below.  For those watching out for the no-vote album tracks, She Bathed Herself In A Bath Of Bleach has now been removed from that list!

I’ve updated my chart since my original entry that was included on your excellent blog on 15/08/13.

The interim period has been a roller coaster in terms of my relationship with the band. (Interesting side point - they are still the only current band that I feel there is a connection to the band, the bond between me and the band’s music is more than just fan and artist).

The highs include on 16-17/12/17, the two days and nights spent in London going to the Roundhouse to see The Holy Bible tour (this is the reason why many of the tracks that didn’t make my first chart are new entries in the updated one as I definitely have a newfound appreciation for those songs).

The second highlight would be going to Newcastle on 6/8/17 to see the band. Two reasons why this was personally special to me was it was a good excuse to spend time with my brother who lives up there (I’m in Coventry so we don’t get together too often).

The other reason this gig was a special memory is that I got to meet a few new friends at the concert, including the delightful @AndDarkWithin.

The third highlight would be on 23/06/19 when my two favourite live bands played 10 minutes from my house! Bon Jovi and the Manics at the Ricoh arena in Cov.

The low point is that due to personal circumstances out of my control I haven’t listened to their recent material as much as I have with previous releases. This is evident is the fact that there’s not a great difference in most of the songs general positions, maybe just moved down spaces to accommodate the occasional climber or new entry but Spoiler Alert the top 9 are as before!

Even though I haven’t listened as much as possible, the Manics remain head & shoulders above every other artist making music at the moment, still producing songs that can move the feet, touch the heart, and get the brain thinking all at the same time. Long may they continue to do this.

Our second chart sees Faster return to the top spot, the top 8 all being from the first three album eras, if like me you attach Judge Yr'self to The Holy Bible.  The rest of the chart is spread out more across the whole back catalogue, with only SATT failing to make the cut.

And it's another treat for the no-vote album tracks as Always/Never picks up its first points, leaving only FIVE album tracks waiting to break their duck.

Manics Top 50s - 18th - 19th October 2021

It's double trouble again with the Manics Top 50s and first up it's a chart with Faster leading the way.  There's a good mixture of the recognised hits alongside B-sides and lower profile album tracks, There By The Grace Of God getting its highest placing so far at number 3.

The Holy Bible era features the most, but Generation Terrorists, Everything Must Go and Lifeblood all have a healthy share topped up by those aforementioned B-sides.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our second chart arrived via email, while most of the submissions come via Twitter Emmy isn't on there but came across the blog and couldn't resist getting involved.  Despite featuring in most people's charts somewhere, this was perhaps surprisingly only the second number 1 for A Design For Life so far (always the bridesmaid!).  Emmy explains below her history with the band and, perhaps fittingly given the comments, the selected songs tend to concentrate around the first and last four albums.

I’ve been a fan for round about 30 years having fallen in love with them as an awkward 13 year old who didn’t quite fit in living in the South Wales valleys. It was so exciting to see & hear a band who were local-ish on the tele/radio & who spoke to my soul. They had me at the old “rubble & shit” quote! No truer word was spoken.

As much as I love Terrorists & Bible, my heart does belong to Everything as it carried me through that pivotal teen to adult phase, working at my A-levels & preparing to go to Uni. Design is the song which has my heart fully for a myriad of reasons but most prominently that it speaks about the Welsh working class experience so poetically & accurately.

To say I’ve had an up & down relationship with the band is no exaggeration, there are times (as you can see from my list) between Everything & Rewind where I lost a sense of connection to them but as in all long term relationships you have to take the rough with the smooth & I know not all fan journeys are the same. I am grateful to now be fully immersed in their present & not just clinging on to their past.

Manics Top 50s - 17th Oct 2021

It's a two chart day and first up Judith gives Golden Platitudes its first 50 pointer at the top of the chart and the namesake for her Twitter handle gains its highest placing yet at number 5.

The Holy Bible and This Is My Truth are the album eras with the most selections, with The Ultra Vivid Lament doing relatively well with four entries.  Builder Of Routines is another of the no-vote album tracks to be selected here, bringing the total down to only seven now!  Will they all end up being selected before the deadline....?

Generation Terrorists (and the pre-GT era) took the most songs with eight, Condemned to Rock 'N' Roll having its second top 10 finish so far to join Motorcycle Emptiness in the upper echelons.

Manics Top 50s - 16th Oct 2021

After a short break from chart entries we return with a chart top-heavy with The Holy Bible, with seven songs making the top 10 including the number 1.  Journal For Plague Lovers also fares well, with six entries, the same number as the Generation Terrorists era.

In terms of the lesser-loved songs go, As Holy As The Soil makes only its second appearance so far down at number 46, being the only Rewind The Film song to make the cut.

Manics Top 50s - 13th Oct 2021

Another single chart day and it's Faster grabbing another 50 points in top spot, with its rivals following close behind.  Diapause manages to take its fourth top 10 finish so far in a chart with four songs from the new album.

It's another chart that finds a place for all album eras, Some Kind Of Nothingness scraping in near the end to ensure Postcards has representation, while The Holy Bible and Everything Must Go are at the head of the queue with eight each.

Manics Top 50s - 12th Oct 2021

Another single chart day and today it's the turn of Little Baby Nothing to hit the heights of number 1, with a top 10 heavy on Generation Terrorists and The Holy Bible in particular, also the album eras that have the most songs featured.  There's plenty of representation from the other albums though, although three didn't manage to take a spot at the top table.

As the tour proper winds its way to a close, are we going to see a few more top 50s coming to fruition?

Manics Top 50s - 9th Oct 2021

Two charts here from a couple of people I had the pleasure of meeting at the recent gigs, first up is Liz, fresh from turning her Jersey to Cardiff nightmare into a positive with her onstage shoutout from Sir Nicholas of Wireshire himself.

And Nicky would be pleased to see Wattsville Blues, William's Last Words and Concrete Fields boosting the votes for Nicky vocals....in fact, what's that I hear?  A no-vote album track klaxon again?  Yes, Wattsville Blues' inclusion now means we're down to just eight album tracks with no votes yet.  Prologue To History also grabs its first number 1 slot.

Note: the rules have now been updated with a revised deadline of Sunday 5th December to take into account the early December gigs.

Our second chart comes from returning top 50-er Craig, who's the third person so far to give Motorcycle Emptiness top spot.  It's a solid top 10 full of songs you would mostly expect to be there or thereabouts in the final 50.

There's the now familiar sight of some pretty decent placings for The Ultra Vivid Lament songs and every album era gets a place, Everything Must Go just edging it with the most entries.

Manics Top 50s - 7th Oct 2021

Only one chart for today, but it's my near-neighbour and name-sharer who came up with the creative masterpiece below!  There's a whopping 12 songs from the Know Your Enemy era, incidentally his first Manics album purchase, but it's The Holy Bible that takes the number 1 slot with Archives Of Pain grabbing its second lot of 50 points so far.

Masses is in second place, which isn't surprising given it was his first ever Manics purchase, and Wrote For Luck manages to break its duck from the last time out by scoring its first points.  Special mention too to "Judge Yr'elf", a little nod to my recent amusing spelling mistake....

Our second chart sees Freedom Of Speech scoring its first 50 pointer at the top, and not only does The Ghost Of Christmas come flying in at number 3, but the other, shall we say, out of character song from the Manics back catalogue Together Stronger is also included!

Caldey scores big on its debut appearance at number 6 and after I announced on Twitter the other day that there are only ten album tracks across their whole back catalogue yet to pick up a point, that particular klaxon went off with this chart as the selection of The Descent (Pages 1 & 2) reduced that list to nine.  Postcards has seven songs included to take a rare victory as most selected era.
