Manics Top 50s - 31st August 2013 part 2

Four more charts here on this busy deadline day!!!  The first comes from the official town crier of the Manics Top 50s, JamGaw, who has done his bit promoting the charts and pulling in one of our special guest contributors.  He will also be compiling one of the sub-charts that come out when all of the votes are in.  Another new number one in our charts today, at a glance I think it might be the only one from 'Postcards...' so far, and one of our relatively even charts across the albums.

As with a few others today, our second chart has a lot of 'Generation Terrorists' in it, but then there are more songs to choose from!  A few more of the lesser loved songs getting their day in the top 10 too, which is always nice!  Our third chart has a new number one too, and a 'Lifeblood' one at that!!! Andy has included a fair few B-sides in his selection, which may be a product of his blog going through every Manics song in turn, which you can find here http://manicsongs.wordpress.com/ .  As we all know, us Manics fans can't get enough of reading stuff about them, so wander over and have a look!!!

Our final chart in part 2 of this blog comes all the way from Finland, I really like the fact that we're getting plenty of variety in the location of our contributors.  A returning number one, which I hope finds its place in the final top 50 (it was my number 2), with 'GT' and 'Holy Bible' tying in the mini-chart this time.  There WILL be a part 3...there are so many charts today, so keep your eyes peeled (apples)!!!!

Manics Top 50s - 31st August 2013 part 1

Deadline day is proving to be as busy as expected with four charts waiting for me when I checked my phone at 7.30 this morning!!!  So as I take on the role of Harry Redknapp with frantic wheeling and dealing, I've decided to split today's blog up a bit, with the early birds taking the first four places.

First up is another special guest chart from Dominik Diamond, best known to people of my age as the presenter of Gamesmaster alongside none other than Sir Patrick Moore, but alongside his varied TV roles and work as a columnist he also has a successful radio career, now being based in Canada. Work on his top 50 had to fit around the start of his new radio show, so extra big thanks for finding the time to contribute!!!  And also thanks to oldnoshie for originally approaching Dominik to take part!!  It's another selection heavily weighted towards 'Generation Terrorists', but with a few cameo appearances from some of the later albums, however no surprises at number one with one of our chart mainstays winning out.

Our second chart is from Chris, who runs the Facebook page Manic Street Preachers Lyrics, so if you're a Facebook user stop by and give his page a 'like'!  Again, 'GT' wins out in number of selections, but it's a 'Holy Bible' favourite that tops the chart.  Our third chart is from another South Korean participant and sees 'Ready for Drowning' take its first number one placing.  '...Richard Nixon' also takes its highest placing so far at number 2.

Our fourth chart here sees another new number one in 'PCP', although another clean sweep for 'GT' in the mini-charts.  After the overall chart is announced I am going to add a new view under each person's entry on the blog to show their 'By Era' chart by scores as well as number of entries.  This may show a different picture as 10 choices from 'GT' may in fact be numbers 41-50 and one choice from 'Lifeblood' may be number 1 for example!!!  Stay tuned tonight for more charts to come on this busy deadline day!!!

Manics Top 50s - 30th August 2013

So, from a conversation between 3 or 4 people on Twitter to the grand total of 50 charts!!  And by the sounds of it a few more last minute entries to come as well!!  Our 50th slot was taken by another special guest in the form of the second chart here today....but more on that shortly.

Our first chart today has managed to be unique in a number of ways!  First of all another new number one but secondly we had two songs which had been in all 48 charts so far.....neither of them made it here!  But saying that, it's another one of those incredibly even charts across the albums and nice to see a few different songs getting their day in the higher reaches of a chart.

And so to our 50th chart contributed by Ben Myers, a journalist for a number of major music publications over the years and author of, among other things, the novel 'Richard'.  To quote another quote about the book itself - "A sympathetic and sad imagining of the boy who became a reluctant pop idol".  The boy in question of course being Richey Edwards.  Stupid me only just heard of this book while talking to other fans through these charts, so I will definitely be finding myself a copy in the near future.

Ben admitted to me that his chart may be weighted towards the earlier albums and it proved to be so!!  As with another chart along similar lines last week though I personally love seeing some of the older songs taking their turn in the chart, especially some of the old B-sides.  And I'm certainly not going to argue with his choice of number one, with it being the same as mine!!

Thanks to Hannah Bevan for originally approaching Ben to take part, I'm sure she's still on cloud 9 from having her question answered by Nicky Wire on the NME Twitter page yesterday (as did fellow top 50 contributors Monkey Marl, KB2X and Lenchik)!!

Final reminder if you are taking part - get your charts to me by the end of tomorrow, Saturday 31st, if you want to be included in the final chart and a big thank you to everyone who has taken part so far!!!!

Manics Top 50s - 29th August 2013

Well, I won't get too carried away, but with this being the 48th chart and two more currently counting down it appears we have hit the magic target of 50 Top 50s!!!  Hopefully we still have a few more to come in the last couple of days too, so if you're still working on yours let me have it before the end of Saturday or give your friends a nudge if they are submitting too!!

And so onto today's selection and 'Yes' is back again in the number one slot!!  Another 'Holy Bible'-heavy chart with 'Generation Terrorists' also featuring favourably and we're still getting those no-vote songs in on the action, this time around it's 'What's my Name' picking up its first points.  Another favourable entry for one of our B-side candidates too!

Manics Top 50s - 27th August 2013

And here we are again with our 46th and 47th top 50....with two still unfinished the doors are open for someone to be the lucky 50th person!!!  Sorry, no prizes, but we'll break out a banner and get Sean to do a trumpet fanfare if you really want to?!!

Another chart from the US first up, leaning more towards the older material, but with a decent slice of 'This is my Truth...' in there as well.  An ever popular number one too, and a top 10 which will all surely have a good shout at their place in the final 50.  The top spot contrasts with our second chart which contains another new number one in 'Love's Sweet Exile'.  A very classic top 10 as well, with the personal touch of 'Firefight' creeping in there for its second top 10 placing.

I'm getting increasingly tempted to add up those totals, but still holding out!!!  Who knows how close it will be in the end, maybe we already have a winner, but maybe YOUR chart will be the one that decides it so be sure to submit it if you want to make the difference!

Manics Top 50s - 26th August 2013

Just the one chart today coming all the way from South Korea!  With the Manics having fans all over the world it's great to get representation from people in different locations to make it a truly global chart :)  And we also have another new number one in 'Underdogs'!!  I found it interesting that there are two songs from 'Send Away the Tigers' in the chart and they come in at 1 and 3!!  Another one of those songs-appearing-for the-first-time as well, even at this late stage we still have plenty of B-sides and tracks from compilations feeling all unloved!!

As if you haven't heard me say it enough, just a reminder that 31st August is the deadline for charts to be considered, so if you or anyone you know is planning on submitting a selection there are only a few days left....is it going to be like transfer deadline day?!!

Manics Top 50s - 25th August 2013

A bumper crop of three charts for your viewing pleasure today, two of which have been counting down gradually over the last week or so.  The first chart is definitely one of our most unique charts, being heavily weighted towards the first 3 albums/eras, but that allows some of those great early B-sides to have their day in the sun.  And I do believe 'Archives of Pain' has earned its first number one slot - that will be another chart by the way, the number one chart!!!  And no matter how much you love the later songs, you have to admit it's a damn fine chart, a glowing comment on the depth of the material available to us when making our selections.

I know I keep saying that some charts are equally spread between the albums when looking at the mini-charts, but our second chart is probably the closest we're going to get to actually being equal!!  I expect Clair herself may be surprised by this too :)  It is interesting to see whether your perceived favourite/not-so-favourite albums actually come out where you expect them to, mine were about right, although I have had other people say otherwise for theirs.  But a good mix in Clair's choices of the chart regulars and some of those that don't appear as often, including at least one no-vote song in there.

The third chart today has another new entry in our list of number ones and a whole host of different songs muscling their way in on the top ten too.  Many of the songs featured are in plenty of charts, but definitely some of their higher placings here.  Also a slight leaning away from the first two albums to balance out with our first selection!!  We've now hit chart number 44, within touching distance of 50, so as always keep them coming!!

Manics Top 50s - 24th August 2013

One week to go before the Manics Top 50s officially close for business!!!  In terms of the overall chart that is, if anyone happens to miss the deadline but still wants to share their chart I will put them up here for everyone to gaze at in wonder.  Which leads me on nicely to today's chart from one of our overseas contributors (or America as it is more commonly known) which contains a very popular number one and an interesting number 7 - one of the songs people tended to suggest to me first if they were previously trying to guess any zero vote songs!!!  It wasn't true even then of course, but a healthy score of 44 points does it no harm at all.  A pretty healthy showing from 'Know Your Enemy' in general too, as well as a decent share from 'Lifeblood'.

Another feature of the final chart that I've come up with is the one person who ends up sharing the most songs in their chart with the final chart.  Now everyone's chart is just as valid as the next person, so I'm not going to make a big deal of this as if that person 'wins' because that's blatantly not true, but I think it will be interesting!!

Manics Top 50s - 23rd August 2013

I have great pleasure in announcing today's top 50 from respected journalist Keith Cameron, no doubt in good spirits following his coffee and croissant with Nicky Wire recently!!  As well as a distinguished and continuing career with a number of top music magazines over the years, Keith may also be familiar to you as the author of the piece inside the booklet of the Holy Bible 10th Anniversary Edition.  As you'll see from the chart, his association with that album is no coincidence, coming out on top in the mini-chart by era.  His choice of number one is certainly a very popular one in these charts, although a surprise placing at number 2 for 'Prologue to History', which has been putting in a decent showing recently in a bid to be the highest placed B-side.

Thanks to Keith for taking the time out to contribute to our chart and also to JamGaw for his excellent recruiting skills, who incidentally suggests that we go and read Keith's just published Mudhoney biography as a thank you.  And as this is a place to celebrate words and music, and not product placement, we're sure he wouldn't mind if you just got it out of the library!  They do give us power after all.....

We are now up to 40 charts, so our goal of at least 50 top 50s is getting closer, especially considering we have 5 on the go at the moment!!

Manics Top 50s - 22nd August 2013

So, here we are with chart number 39 and I have to say, given my own chart, that I am absolutely in favour of the number 1 selection!!  Again, quite an even selection over the different albums and I'm still surprised by some of those songs that just consistently keep turning up in the high reaches.  Not really surprised as they're great songs, but it's great that there are some songs that absolutely everyone loves.  Might there be a chart coming that turns that on its head...?

Today we have a special guest chart, not part of the top 50 as it is only a top 3, but nevertheless an interesting peek into the mind of a name that will be familiar to any of us 90s kids!!  So, courtesy of our own recent contributor David Wells, I have the pleasure to announce the top 3 Manics songs of Les 'Fruitbat' Carter of top beat combo Carter USM!!  Oh, how we chuckle to ourselves at number 3....

1. Motorcycle Emptiness
2. Australia
3. Kevin Carter

So, as the final chart looms what are people's thoughts about how we do it?  My initial plans are two separate tweet-downs of 50-26 and 25-1 over a period of two days - can people wait until the weekend of the 7th and 8th of September?!  I think a weekend would mean more people are around to see it and also gives me a week to pull everything together.  What do you think?  Anyway, take it away Meg...

Manics Top 50s - 20th August 2013

Two excellent charts today, having been number 1 twice in the first three charts submitted, 'La Tristesse..' makes a welcome return to the top in the first chart which shows a resounding victory for the 'Generation Terrorists' era in the mini-chart!!

The second chart also has some interesting selections, with a relatively high proportion of B-sides and non-album tracks, some making their first appearance in the vote.  And 'Ocean Spray' bags its first number 1 slot!

As promised yesterday, a few more details regarding the Top 10 videos courtesy of Mild Manics, I will also add this as a new tab alongside the top 50 rules and the index:

- Each Chart to consist of 10 Manics videos in order of preference from 1-10
- Only official Manics singles with the relevant official video are eligible. For the purpose of this chart, 'Show Me the Wonder' is fully eligible.
- Closing date 30 Sept 2013

Submitting- preferably via Twitter, with hashtag #ManicsTop10Vids. Would be very grateful for a notification to @MildManics, who is administrating this chart, to ensure your chart is picked up for inclusion in the final figures.

Manics Top 50s - 19th August 2013

So, as we move into the final stretch we have chart number 36, and from the number of people who have either already started the countdown or have indicated a chart is forthcoming, we're looking good to hit 50 top 50s!!!  This may include some familiar names, a few of whom have been asked and have accepted the challenge!

Tonight's chart has a very classic looking top 10 and another of those charts where the 'By Era' view is pretty balanced across the board.  I have to admit the temptation to start totalling everything up is overwhelming for me, but I'm resisting!!!  There are a few obvious mainstays of everyone's charts but on the whole I couldn't second guess what will make it and what will miss out!!

Also beginning to find its feet is a sister chart for Manics videos - Top 10 this time!!  Full details will follow with the next blog post but if you really can't wait check out #ManicsTop10Vids on Twitter.  @MildManics is doing the honours on the compilation of everything but you will see the results here so everything is in one place.
