Tolerate takes the honours in this chart, while the By Era split is possibly the most even we've had so far - two album eras with five entries, four with four entries and six with three entries.

But my little eyes light up at three songs appearing for the first time - so say hello to My Drowning World, A Secret Society and Dying Breeds, which bring the number of no-vote songs down to 39.

Manics Top 50s - 27th Nov 2021

It was a one chart day on Saturday and that person was....oh, it was me.  So I didn't even have to pull rank to move myself to the top of the blog.  For anyone who has been following along on Twitter you'll know that I ranked all 338 of the songs, you'll find the link below if you want to dive in deeper than the 50 and see my story and all the associated sub-charts, similar to what you'll get for the top 50s once we've finished.

But my By Era chart is exclusive to this blog, so don't say you don't get treats here.  And it was a tie at the top for Generation Terrorists, The Holy Bible and Everything Must Go with eight each, which feels oddly satsifying.

Last but not least in this batch is an emailed entry and possibly my favourite Manics origin story so far.  Born A Girl makes its debut in the 50 point club and Generation Terrorists takes the honours by era, but it's over to Daisy to explain the background in more detail:

I’m a relatively new Manics fan, having gotten into them just over a year ago now. I started listening to them because my dad told me he wasn’t a fan and that was my form of teenage rebellion, but after getting hooked on The Holy Bible I am now a bonafide Manics obsessive, with posters on my wall and Larkin on my shelf like every other teenage girl.

Born A Girl is my favourite Manics song because I think it’s so beautifully melancholic and sad, and it’s some of Nicky’s best lyricism for sure. It’s hugely underrated even with Manics fans.

Manics Top 50s - 24th Nov 2021

It was another one chart day yesterday from a top 50 ever-present, albeit in a different guise than usual.  But it was a new number 1 both in terms of comparing with his previous charts and with the current batch of charts in general, as Die In The Summertime claimed its first 50 points.  It's So Easy is the next song to get off the mark with its first vote.

It was also a trademark By Era chart as only three songs from beyond Everything Must Go made the cut and four from the Everything Must Go-era itself, leaving Generation Terrorists (and before) and The Holy Bible with 36 entries between them.

Manics Top 50s - 23rd Nov 2021

It's a one chart day today but it has a nice background to brighten up the blog a bit.  Yes grabs another number 1 slot, while there's a relatively rare outing for The Future Has Been Here 4 Ever which takes its highest placing so far at 15.

The first four albums all battle it out for supremacy in the By Era chart with 6 or 7 each, Gold Against The Soul and Everything Must Go just edging it.  We're now up to chart number 85!

Our second chart is another nicely presented entry, but despite the Journal backdrop it's No Surface All Feeling that takes the number 1 slot and Holy Bible that takes the honours in the By Era chart.  Blank Diary Entry and Auto-Intoxication are a couple of album tracks with less than a handful of entries so far that manage to get a few more points on the board here.

As well as providing us with a few comments inserted against chosen tracks and giving You Love Us another 50 points, Steve has also helped out three of the no-vote songs get off the mark - Fear Of Motion, The Instrumental and All Alone Here all featuring for the first time.

Steven Drake @sdrake767
1. You Love Us
Hours of guitar practice learning the solos and always a high point of every gig, my love is made even stronger by a live version from the early 90s that turns in to a fight
2. A Design For Life
3. If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next
4. Fear Of Motion
Probably unusual to have this little song so high up but I love the cheap, throwaway nature of it. A real personal choice dating back to rummaging in the loft for my parents record player and represents the start of my desire to collect every Manics song (at that point I only owned EMG, KYE and TIMTTMY)
5. Ready For Drowning
Assisted by the DVD extra on the Millennium Stadium DVD and John Cale duet
6. No Surface All Feeling
7. Archives Of Pain
8. Kevin Carter
Possibly unusual to be this high up but the song that got me in to the band in guitar lessons in the late 90s
9. International Blue
10. The Masses Against The Classes
The excitement of listening to Radio 1 to hear it announced as number 1
11. You Stole The Sun From My Heart
12. Found That Soul
13. Show Me The Wonder
14. 1985
Should have been the first single....
15. Roses In The Hospital
16. Vision Blurred
Similar to Fear of Motion, this just sounds like a band doing what they want, and I love that

Last but not least is Jack who kindly got a chart together amidst mounting college work, hopefully his grades won't suffer as a result!  As with the first chart in this batch, it's A Design For Life that triumphs and Everything Must Go takes a clean sweep by having the most entries By Era too.  Jack admitted The Ultra Vivid Lament has yet to get much airplay, so you never know next time that could have a chance at featuring.

Manics Top 50s - 21st Nov 2021 part 2

The charts have kept rolling in today but here we're catching up with a couple from last night so the blogs don't get too crowded!

First up it was a nicely presented chart that deserves to be shown on the blog, but unfortunately the image sizes meant either relatively small or too big for the blog frame, so I've reproduced it below too!  Show Me The Wonder is the latest song to join the 50 point club and International Blue at number 2 also claims its highest placing so far.

It's a close-run thing in the By Era chart as This Is My Truth just edges out Everything Must Go by seven to six, with a few other albums sharing the load to make it to five and four.

Seven different albums get at least four picks, but it's The Holy Bible that's out in front with eight.  Postcards fails to get a single selection in either of the charts of the day.

Manics Top 50s - 21st Nov 2021

One single top 50 in this blog and it's Condemned To Rock 'N' Roll that takes it's second 50 point haul so far and Bag Lady 'bags' its highest spot at number 5, its second top 10 placing.  Vivian gets a relatively rare outing too with only its third selection.

The Holy Bible hits double figures with ten picks breaking down By Era, with half of the chart coming from either The Holy Bible, Generation Terrorists or Everything Must Go eras.

Manics Top 50s - 19th Nov 2021

So I went through my spreadsheet last night and worked out how many no-vote songs were remaining overall (48 if you were wondering), only to find afterwards that an email had gone into my junk folder with two no-vote songs selected!

So alongside A Design For Life at number 1 and first top 10 finishes for Vision Blurred, Firefight and Ballad Of The Bangkok Novotel, Dai has given Kodawari and Ostpolitik their first points to bring that total down to 46.  There were 36 back in 2015 so let's see if we can get below that total this time.  The Holy Bible just edged out Send Away The Tigers in the By Era chart by 7 to 6, meaning there was a more even spread across the albums.

The second chart in this batch comes with extensive notes, so I'll leave it to Dr Gary to explain in his own words in batches of ten!

Dr Gary P Marriner @DrGaryMarriner
1. Motorcycle Emptiness
2. Everything Must Go
3. No Surface All Feeling
4. Prologue To History
5. Divine Youth
6. Faster
7. Motown Junk
8. You Love Us
9. Sepia
10. Black Holes For The Young

Classic track for the top spot, no surprises there. Few oddities in my top 10 including Prologue to History, just can’t beat that damn harsh rock piano, something about the anger in the song gets me every time. Divine Youth and Sepia both ache of melancholic beauty and nostalgic sorrow in very different ways. Black Holes for the Young is not an amazing track but the contrast between JDB and SEB is. Her class-ridden droll juxtaposed to his unashamedly Welsh statements creates something that speaks to the absolute heart of what the later 20th century was about for me.

11. Stay Beautiful
12. From Despair To Where
13. Kevin Carter
14. Removables
15. If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next
16. A Design For Life
17. Little Baby Nothing
18. Europa Geht Durch Mich
19. Slash N' Burn
20. In Eternity

More obvious classics with the two biggest hitters (Tolerate & Design for Life) making my top 20. Stay Beautiful, From Despair to Where and Slash ‘n’ Burn all make it in for their absolute banger status when the music is turned up loud and we shout along. Every Manics fan deserves to have heard Stay Beautiful live at least once. Kevin Carter was one of the first tracks that led me to find out more about the people behind the songs. Removables is just so damn sad but speaks of an appealing movement of emotions that gives it something more. Funny the Little Baby Nothing and Europa ended up next to each other. Two very good duets, the first of which is another simple classic and tells a perfect story. Europa should have been the anthem that prevented Brexit.

21. Yes
22. First Republic
23. Nobody Loved You
24. Pedestal
25. Intravenous Agnostic
26. Sleepflower
27. Enola/Alone
28. Show Me The Wonder
29. Hold Me Like A Heaven
30. Donkeys

Yes, First Republic and Intravenous Agnostic are all fantastic rock songs with excellent lyrics. All examples of songs that again made me learn and research. Nobody Loved You builds and builds to that moment and is heartbreaking every time. If it is possible to detach the song from Richey I almost feel like it stands stronger as a pure song of loss. Show me the Wonder was the first Manics song my wife liked and we still sing it together in the car, a very good reason to have it in there. Sleepflower will always remind me of being a teenager pogoing around in my bedroom whereas Hold me Like A Heaven will always remind me of meeting my wife and falling in Love. The opening line to Donkeys is one of the greatest lyrics ever written.

31. Socialist Serenade
32. Further Away
33. The Masses Against The Classes
34. Leviathan
35. Masking Tape
36. Golden Platitudes
37. This Joke Sport Severed
38. Be Natural
39. Valley Boy
40. Afterending

The dog barking at the start of Socialist Serenade is just fab, the song speaking of the contradictions in modern socialism really helped me hone my personal politics whereas Masses is just an absolute banger that deserves to be remembered more and I’ll always love that it was the first new No1 of this entire millennium. Leviathan is my 6th form Philosophy class in a nutshell, and I’ll always love it for that. Masking Tape provided me with the perfect metaphor for my own feelings and is an underrated gem. Golden Platitudes has the colonise the moon lyric but is also a grand old anthem of disaffection. Valley Boy gets a mention for being so beautifully European long before Futurology. I’ve always seen myself as European and when I started travelling more that song came with me. Afterending sneaks in as my favourite track from TUVL and for its brilliant lyrics.

41. Spectators Of Suicide
42. Red Sleeping Beauty
43. Ballad Of The Bangkok Novotel
44. People Give In
45. ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayitsworldwouldfallapart
46. Morning Comrades
47. A Song For The Sadness
48. We Her Majesty's Prisoners
49. Patrick Bateman
50. Heyday Of The Blood

Final 10 are mostly all songs that appeal to different parts of my character. The opening speech on Spectators of Suicide Heavenly Version is another touchstone from where I learnt a lot, same with Heyday of the Blood. Red Sleeping Beauty led me to find McCarthy and become a huge fan of their work too. People Give in was the anthem of the latter stages of my PhD along with A Song for the Sadness. Ballad of the Bangkok Novotel feels raw and dirty and exotic and ridiculous, kind of like my experience in Bangkok. We Her Majesty’s Prisoners and Patrick Bateman brim with a ridiculous confidence lyrically and I adore them for it. So crass, so offensive and so bloody arrogant.

Manics Top 50s - 18th Nov 2021

It was a four chart day yesterday, which I imagine might start to become more common as everyone finalises the charts they've been agonising over for the last few months.

First up is another ever-present from the top 50s and fantasy setlists, Nick has changed the number 1 from his previous two entries as Yes slips down to fourth to be overtaken by Faster.  As Holy As The Soil takes its first top 10 spot and therefore its highest placing so far, with All We Make Is Entertainment also getting its highest placing and First Republic its first vote full stop at 13.

A number of other B-sides also pick up some much needed points to avoid being near the back of the queue come the final reckoning.  I'll be going through soon to find out how many no-vote songs are left overall.

Next is our first Twitter blue tick participant this time, Dom is a Nottingham-based self-confessed Manics obsessive and music writer who was lucky enough to interview Nicky Wire only a few months ago, and for the third time no less!  And as Emily Hyatt documented in her recent (excellent) fanzine for the Manics tour, he clearly looks enough like a famous person to have been mistaken for one of the band in Halifax!

It's a Motorcycle Emptiness number 1 and a classic top 10, with Orwellian just knocking on the door on behalf of the new songs. Having taken its first vote only the previous day, Starlover now climbs even higher to number 20, with the Generation Terrorists (and before) and Holy Bible eras coming out on top equally with nine.

Motorcycle Emptiness comes out on top again in the third chart of this batch and there's a highest finish so far for Dead Trees And Traffic Islands at number 6.  His Last Painting picks ups its third vote in a couple of days, it's strange how some of the lesser-loved songs just seem to turn up in bursts, like we had with So Dead a few weeks ago!

This Is My Truth tops Dan's By Era chart with nine, closely followed by Know Your Enemy, a little break from the usual suspects there!

The final chart of this batch gives us a nice bit of symmetry, with Faster at number 1 again to book-end the two Motorcycle Emptinesses.  Tolerate takes its third number 2 slot, while Everything Must Go takes the honours in the By Era chart with eight entries.

Manics Top 50s - 17th Nov 2021

There are four charts here including the one that took us over the previous record of 68 charts, and they don't look like stopping any time soon.  Can we break 100?!

First is one of our more artistic entries, with Ocean Spray taking its second number 1 slot.  This Sullen Welsh Heart and Locust Valley both take their place in the top 10 and earn their highest placing so far.  To go with the number 1 and the top 10 B-side, Know Your Enemy takes the honours in the By Era chart with eight.

I'd can can if I could @gloomyok

The next chart is another artistic one, with Bob opting for leopard print and joining his daughter's previous submission in the process.  A Design For Life takes the 50 points home but it's The Holy Bible that tops the By Era chart with eleven, so that's only two of the songs on the album not making it.

It's also a top three that mirrors the top three of the previous editions of the top 50s in content, if not in order.  But will something else break in this time?

The third chart in this batch sees Motown Junk take its first number 1, perhaps surprising that it took this long?  Automatik Teknicolour appears in its highest position in 6th, although not its only top 10 finish, while Starlover picks up its first vote.

There's a good spread across the albums in the By Era chart, with The Holy Bible just nudging ahead with seven.

Last but not least we have La Tristesse Durera appearing top of the pile for the fourth time so far, with the second place for Solitude Sometimes Is its highest position so far.  Caldey grabs its third vote, but the second in the top 10, if we were going on average points that would score pretty highly!

There are also rare outings for What Happened To The Blue Generation, TE Lawrence On A Bike, Teenage 20/20 and Wattsville Blues, all picking up some much needed points for their tally.
